Scottish. 4th (Donside Highland) VB Gordon Highlanders pipers plaid brooch circa 1893-1908. White metal disc mounted with the insignia of a cockerel within a thistle wreath an oval inscribed, “4th Donside Hlnd Vol Bn Gordon Highrs Watch”; cockerel statant to voided centre.

4th Volunteer Battalion (Volunteers, former 4th Aberdeenshire Rifle Volunteer Corps), later became 6th (The Banff and Donside) Btn. During the South African war the battalion supplied an officer and 29 Other ranks to the 1st Volunteer Service Battalion and another 9 men to the 1st Volunteer Bn Gordon Highlanders. In 1903 the battalion was authorised to wear the kilt, sporran, hose and glengarry Gordon Highlanders with a drab service doublet rather than the dark green doublet they had previously worn.

The Gordon Highlanders was a line infantry regiment of the British Army that existed for 113 years, from 1881 until 1994, when it was amalgamated with the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth Highlanders and Cameron Highlanders) to form the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). The kilt pin was also worn by the officers of the Seaforth Highlanders and is still worn by the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.
