We were asked by a client to recreate his great grandfathers WW1 5th Bn Seaforth Highlanders sgian dubh as although he still had the original he did not want to risk wearing it out regularly. This was a project we were very happy to develop as being located in North East Scotland the 5th Seaforth’s are one of our local regiments.
The first sgian dubh was to be in sterling silver as the original officers pattern. Following the first silver version another client who also had another family member that served with the regiment during WW1 come forward. He requested the brass version of the sgian dubh in memory of his families service during The Great War.
Seaforth Highlanders 5th (Sutherland and Caithness) Battalion - When war broke out in August 1914 the Seaforth Highlanders 5th (Sutherland and Caithness) Battalion was a Territorial Unit based in Golspie with the Seaforth & Cameron Brigade - Highland Division. They mobilised to Bedford from their annual camp on the 5th of August 1914. From there they were posted to full time service in France on the 2nd of May 1915.
The 1/4th (Ross Highland) Battalion landed at Le Havre as part of the 152nd Brigade in the 51st (Highland) Division in November 1914. The 1/5th (Sutherland and Caithness) Battalion and the 1/6th (Morayshire) Battalion both landed in France as part of the 152nd Brigade in the 51st (Highland) Division in May 1915. All three battalions continued to serve on the Western Front until the end of the war.
During WW2 the 5th Battalion formed part of the reconstituted 152nd Brigade in the reconstituted 51st Highland Division, and served in the Middle East, in the Allied invasion of Sicily in July 1943, in the Allied invasion of Italy in September 1943 and then in North-West Europe.
All of our sgian dubhs are hand made by our regimental silversmith and this sgian dubh is based WW1 original. The Seaforth Highlanders 5th (Sutherland and Caithness) sgian dubh features a Sutherland cat with regimental motto in a school overlaying a hand carved star insignia on a black wood hilt. The top thistle mount is stone set with a smoky quartz gem stone and the scabbard mounts have hand engraved thistles designs. Recreating the past in memory of the fallen.
