Vintage Scottish Otter Sporrans Through The Years - For at least the last couple of hundred years, we have a rich history of using otter fur to fashion exquisite sporrans. The tradition of incorporating otter fur into these iconic Scottish accessories may even stretch back further into the enigmatic depths of Highland lore.

It is worth noting that the otter is now a protected species, and rightfully so. However, amidst the passage of time, vintage and antique otter sporrans have managed to withstand the test of time and occasionally resurface. At House of Labhran, we take great pride in breathing new life into these historical treasures, meticulously restoring them to their former glory, and allowing them to grace the attire of discerning individuals for countless more years to come.

The Eurasian otter is undeniably one of Scotland's most formidable predators, thriving within its untainted habitats. This magnificent species, known by its scientific name as Lutra lutra, had unfortunately vanished from the majority of England and Wales during the mid-20th century due to extensive hunting and the devastating effects of pesticide pollution on water sources. However, in the purest waters of Scotland's northern and western regions, the otter managed to endure the trials of its endangered status.

In recent times, Scotland has witnessed a remarkable resurgence of this captivating creature. As the country's waterways become increasingly free from contamination, the otter's population is on a steady path of recovery not just within Scotland, but throughout the entirety of the United Kingdom. Approximately 8000 otters can be found flourishing across the picturesque landscapes of Scotland, serving as a testament to the resilience of these solitary yet semi-aquatic mammals.

The daily lives of otters revolve around their undeniable affinity for water, where they spend most of their time hunting for sustenance. Lochs, rivers, and even the vast sea itself provide crucial sources of nourishment for these magnificent creatures. Right here, in the tranquil burn just below our studio, and in the nearby waterways scattered throughout our locality, we are incredibly fortunate to glimpse the majestic presence of these elusive otters.

Due to import bans on Scottish otter fur products we cannot export the sporran so they can only be rehomed to UK clients. To see the current range on sporrans please visit the shop page.
