Sterling Silver H&I Cantle Goat Hair Dress Sporran

When one of our regular clients come to us with an idea to create a sterling silver sporran we are always interested in their ideas firstly. In the case of this project our client had seen a detail in a 1912 Glasgow antique silver goat hair sporran. The leather inserts under the cantle were layered in two colours of leather with a broguing detail and this is what he wanted to replicate.

Using the idea from the original pattern we worked to create a design incorporating one of our Hamilton & Inches zoomorphic hallmarked sterling silver cantles and a pair of bead hammered silver bells. The silversmiths have been hand-crafting Highland dress accessories since 1861. The workshops are home to generations of master craftsmen and women and hold the Royal Warrant for Silversmithing

The cantle was laid over an oxblood leather that showed through the piercing in the cantle classic Scottish zoomorphic design. Under the oxblood leather we added a black leather brogued layer.

The body of the original sporran had been a wavy Angora goat hair body, but we used a fine straight goats hair to give a classic 19th century style. The two leather slip idea was then also used under the hammered silver sporran bells, to create a two layered look on the two goat hair tassels.

The back of the sporran featured a classic small military style back purse and detailed with fine leather tooling on a oxblood leather to style with the leather on the front of the sporran. With a matching oxblood leather sporran strap completed the look.

The sporran is now complete and off to a new life with the client. An Edinburgh hallmarked sterling silver sporran with antique goat hair sporran styling heritage.
