London Scottish Pipe Major Sporran
London Scottish Pipe Major Sporran - We acquired a vintage London Scottish Pipe Major - Drum Major sporran cantle a few months ago. It was in need of new knobs on the top edge and stripping and re plating. It had been in an old box of very old cantle parts, some blanks, some broken or damaged pieces that hand been sold to a scrap metal dealer. Luckily someone spotted what they were before they were melted down for scrap. We showed in it's sorry state to an old friend and client in the US could see beyond the dirt and tarnish and we started work on a restoration.
The sporran has now been completed to the regimental pattern with a dark blue insert under the cantle and a fine new hair body to the sporran. It now looks amazing and is off to a new home in the US.
The London Scottish was a Volunteer infantry regiment of the British Army. Formerly a regiment, the unit is now 'A' (London Scottish) Company of the London Regiment.The regiment was founded on the formation of the Volunteer Force in 1860. Originally as part of the Volunteer Force sponsored by The Highland Society of London and The Caledonian Society of London, a group of individual Scots raised The London Scottish Rifle Volunteers under the command of Lt Col Lord Elcho, later The Earl of Wemyss and March. The regiment became the 7th (London Scottish) Middlesex Volunteer Rifle Corps and then, in 1908, the 14th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish).

A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for ‘purse’). Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.
